NIH Public Access Policy

My Bibliography
and Citations

My Bibliography is a citation management tool used to track publications and compile, organize, and store citations. It provides seamless access to citations from PubMed and PubMed Central and supports the manual entry of additional references.

My Bibliography plays a critical role in demonstrating compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy (NIH PAP) and is used to verify adherence to this policy.

My Bibliography

Prove compliance by associating your PMCID (PubMed central ID) with your citation.

  • PMCID is NOT the same as a PMID (PubMed ID)
  • Can use NIHMSID as proof of temporary compliance on citation in lieu of PMCID for up to 3 months. The NIHMSID is typically issued within 1-3 business days after the initial deposit of a manuscript into the NIH Manuscript Submission System.

NIH will verify compliance with the policy by reviewing My Bibliography citations for a PMCID and comparing the PMCID “available by” date with the “published in final edited form” date to ensure the manuscript has been added to PMC by the official date of publication as required per policy.

See NIH PAP Overview page for additional details

Cite all grants related to the research, including grants from University NIH-funded resources (such as CTSI) if applicable.

  • Not applicable: article is exempt from NIH policy since it is not NIH funded
  • Not defined: grant information needs to be added to citation to determine if article is exempt/not applicable
  • In process: NIHMSID has been provided and article is under review by PMC post submission, PMCID is in process
  • Complete: awards have been added and article is compliant with the NIHPAP with a PMCID
  • Non-compliant: article reflects NIH awards but does not have an NIHMSID or PMCID attached to prove compliance

My Bibliography Compliance Status
